Chemical Reactions and Equations

In order to balance the equation we need to add a coefficient of 2 to the water molecule to balance the hydrogen atoms: CH4(g) + 2O2(g) -> CO2(g) + 2H2O(l)

Steps to balance a chemical equation

The coefficients indicate that for every molecule of CH4 that reacts, two molecules of O2 are required to react, and one molecule of CO2 and two molecules of H2O are produced.
